TONIGHT: MISTY, OUTBREAKS OF RAIN

Becoming drier and brighter during Thursday. Freshening NW’ly winds easing overnight. Rain spreading from the west on Friday. Light S’ly winds bringing misty conditions.

A better weekend with sunny or clear periods and as freshening SW’ly winds veer NW’ly.

Next week perhaps mainly dry at first. Showers or longer spells of rain possible later as N’ly winds increase fresh to strong.

GENERAL SITUATION AND SYNOPSIS 06:00 UTC

A shallow area of low pressure between Scotland and Iceland will feed a weak trough east over the Northern Isles today.

On Thursday, as the low moves east into Scandinavia, pressure will then build to the west, with a NW’ly airflow developing over northeast Scotland. This will ease away overnight, as a weak ridge moves east over northern Scotland.

The ridge will decline early on Friday with fronts following, as another depression drifts east to the south of Iceland.

During the weekend, this low is expected to drift east close to the Northern Isles, with a NW’ly airflow developing as pressure again builds to the west.

The present prognosis is for an anticyclone to remain slow-moving over the Atlantic, bringing a light W to NW’ly airflow for the start of next week. Later, with pressure predicted to fall across the North Sea and southern Scandinavia, a strengthening N’ly airflow is possible over northeast Scotland.

FORECAST FOR NEXT THREE DAYS
Confidence level: Weather type – medium/high. Timing – medium.

Today a high of around 15° to 17° Celsius is expected, falling to about 11° Celsius tonight. A little cooler on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures in the daily range 13° to 16° Celsius down to around 9° Celsius.

WEDNESDAY 28th: Though there may be a few brighter spells around at first, today will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain. These could be heavy at times, especially in Shetland this afternoon. It will also become misty with hill fog. Winds will stay light, mainly a F1-3 S to SW’ly. Remaining cloudy and misty tonight, with further outbreaks of rain. However, these will become lighter and more patchy.

Sea state – Slight, with a 1 metre S to SE’ly wind-swell.

THURSDAY 29th: Though starting cloudy with some mainly light and patchy rain, it will become drier and brighter through the day as NW’ly winds freshen F4-5. A mainly dry end to the day, with some clear spells developing. Winds falling light overnight.

Sea state – Mostly slight, with a 1 metre wind-swell, but becoming N’ly in direction overnight. Through the day increasing moderate to rough east of Shetland, with a 2 to 3 metre N to NW’ly wind-swell, and elsewhere moderate, with a 2 metre NW’ly wind-swell.

FRIDAY 30th: A dry and bright start to the day. While Orkney will cloud over during the morning, with patchy drizzle and misty conditions spreading up from the southwest, much of Shetland – while clouding over from the south – may well stay dry until evening. However, outbreaks of rain and misty conditions are likely to reach Fair Isle during the afternoon. Light and variable winds becoming a F2-3 S to SE’ly.

Sea state – Becoming mainly slight, with a 1 metre NW’ly wind-swell later becoming SE’ly. Increasing moderate to the west of Orkney by the afternoon, and extending to the east of Orkney and Fair Isle by the evening, with a 2 metre SE’ly wind-swell.

10-DAY OUTLOOK

Confidence level: Weather type – medium/low. Timing – low.

Becoming cooler, with temperatures ranging from a daytime high of 13° to 15° Celsius down to an overnight low of about 9° Celsius.

SATURDAY 31st: Orkney probably becoming drier and brighter by morning. Cloudy with outbreaks of rain and misty conditions at first over Shetland, but also becoming drier and brighter during the morning. The remainder of the day then bright with scattered showers and a light to moderate SW’ly wind.

Sea state – Overnight becoming moderate in Orkney waters, with a 2 metre W’ly wind-swell. Around Shetland moderate to slight, with a 1 to 2 metre E’ly wind-swell.

SUNDAY 1st: Rather cloudy at times with showers and freshening W to NW’ly winds.

MONDAY 2nd – SATURDAY 6th: Mainly dry and bright at first with light SW to W’ly winds. The second half of the week possibly cloudy, with the chance of some showers or the occasional longer spell of rain. N’ly winds increasing fresh – possibly strong – at times.

DISCLAIMER

Be aware that the weather over north-west Europe – and especially around the Northern Isles – is part of an ever-changing and dynamic system. Therefore regard the ‘10-Day Outlook’ as a guide only – there are times when any outlook going beyond about 36 to 48 hours is likely to prove unreliable.

Always check the latest forecast from the UK Met Office before undertaking any weather-dependent activity.
